coleman a. young was born in detroit on may 24, 1918 and was detroit's first black mayor. he served from 1975-1993 for a total of five terms. although his administration was controversial, he was a tireless advocate for federal funding for detroit construction projects, and his administration saw the completion of detroit landmarks including the renaissance center, the people mover and joe louis arena.
