john lee hooker (August 22, 1917 – June 21, 2001) was an influential post-war blues singer, guitarist, and songwriter. he developed a rhythmically free, half-spoken style that was his trademark. in 1948, hooker came to detroit and worked at ford motor company. he remained there for most of his career. he made himself at home in the blues venues and saloons on Hastings Street in the heart of black entertainment on detroit's east side and his popularity grew quickly. his best known songs include "boogie chillen" (1948) and "boom boom" (1962). in 2000, hooker was awarded the grammy lifetime achievement award.
